Toronto stocks hammered by economic jitters

TORONTO, Jan 17 (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange's main index dove on Thursday, as nagging fears of the possibility of a recession in the U.S. prompted a slump in resources and financials, leading to a third straight day of hefty losses.

The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE unofficially closed down 268.93 points, or 2.06 percent, at 12,805.93.
