Toronto stocks advance early, RIM leads charge
TORONTO Dec 20 (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange's main index jumped early on Thursday in a broad rally led by its biggest sectors -- energy, materials and financials -- and by Research In Motion RIM.TO, which reports quarterly results later in the day.
RIM, the BlackBerry maker, was the biggest weighted gainer by far, up C$3.41 at C$105.50. Also in the TSX tech group, Cognos Inc CSN.TO climbed 15 Canadian cents to C$57.58 after it reported a near-doubling of third-quarter profit. For details, see: [nN20156607]
Overall, the S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE was up 59.05 points, or 0.4 percent, at 13,448.87 with all of its sectors on positive terrain just after the open.
The energy group rose 0.5 percent, materials added 0.4 percent and the financial services group was up 0.3 percent.
