TORONTO, Sept 8 (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange's main index retreated into negative territory on Monday, giving back the morning's large gain as falling resource shares offset optimism over the bailout of Fannie Mae FNM.N and Freddie Mac FRE.N.

The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE was down 1.15 points at 12,815.27. (Reporting by Leah Schnurr; Editing by Peter Galloway)
