Toronto stock index drops 4.3 pct on commodities

TORONTO Oct 2 (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange's main index fell more than 500 points on Thursday morning as Potash Corp of Saskatchewan (POT.TO: Quote) and Agrium Inc (AGU.TO: Quote) tumbled after Merrill Lynch chopped its ratings on fertilizer stocks, while oil and gold prices also sank.

The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE was down 503.16 points, or 4.3 percent, at 11,211.35. (Reporting by Jennifer Kwan; Editing by Peter Galloway)
