Toronto stock index closes below 10,000 points

TORONTO, Oct 7 (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange's main index fell 4 percent on Tuesday, closing below the 10,000-point level for the first time since July 2005, as deepening worries of a global recession prompted sharp selling of financials and energy stocks.

The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE unofficially ended down 417.18 points, or 4.08 percent, at 9,813.25. (Reporting by Cameron French; Editing by Peter Galloway)
