CANADA STOCKS-TSX turns negative as bank shares give up gains

TORONTO, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Toronto’s key stock index fell into negative territory on Friday and undid an early gain of 1.8 percent as a turnaround in heavyweight financial shares offset the strength in the energy and materials sectors.

At 10:17 a.m. (1517 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE was down 2.51 points at 8,877.10. Earlier, it rallied as high as 9,036.44, for a gain of 156 points, or 1.8 percent. (Reporting by Frank Pingue; editing by Jeffrey Hodgson)
