CANADA STOCKS-Commodities lift TSX at midday

TORONTO, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Toronto's main stock index gained more than 1 percent at midday on Friday, carried higher by strength in commodity issues, which overcame weakness in the rest of the market.

The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE rose 100.29 points, or 1.18 percent, to 8,586.85. The energy and materials sectors rose, while the index's eight other main groups were in the red. (Reporting by Ka Yan Ng; editing by Peter Galloway)
