CANADA STOCKS-TSX soars on US asset plan, Petro-Canada deal
TORONTO, March 23 (Reuters) - Toronto's main stock index opened sharply higher on Monday, buoyed by optimism over a U.S. plan to purge banks of toxic assets and news that Suncor Energy (SU.TO: Quote) has agreed to buy rival Petro-Canada PCA.TO.
The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE rose 264.89 points, or 3.11 percent, at 8,771.24 in early trade. (Reporting by Jennifer Kwan; Editing by Jeffrey Hodgson)
