CANADA STOCKS-TSX ends higher on Petro-Canada, U.S. asset plan

TORONTO, March 23 (Reuters) - Toronto’s main stock index surged five percent on Monday to its highest close in six weeks, with a massive takeover of Petro-Canada PCA.TO and a U.S. plan to rid banks of toxic assets boosting sentiment.

The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE unofficially closed up 423.70 points, or 4.98 percent, at 8,930.05. (Reporting by Frank Pingue; Editing by Jeffrey Hodgson)
