CANADA STOCKS-TSX closes higher on firm commodity prices

TORONTO, May 22 (Reuters) - Toronto’s main stock index closed higher on Friday, but off earlier highs, as energy and materials issues got a lift from firmness in commodity prices.

The S&P/TSX composite index <.GSPTSE unofficially closed up 50.18 points, or 0.5 percent, at 9,999.77. Earlier in the day, the index rose as much as 1.2 percent. (Reporting by Jennifer Kwan; editing by Peter Galloway)
