CANADA STOCKS-TSX rises as U.S. data lifts resource shares

TORONTO, April 23 (Reuters) - Toronto’s main stock index gained ground for a fifth consecutive day on Friday as strong U.S. economic news boosted demand for resource stocks, particularly gold and energy issues.

The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE unofficially closed up 67.77 points, or 0.56 percent, at 12,228.64. (Reporting by Cameron French; editing by Peter Galloway)
