TORONTO, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Toronto's main stock index slid 1 percent at midday on Thursday as gold shares extended a steep decline on the back of a weakening price for the precious metal.
The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE tumbled 124.79 points to 12,376.93, with the materials group, home to gold miners, posting the heaviest loss -- more than 2 percent. Eight of the index's 10 main groups were lower at midday.
