ECONOMIC NEWS

Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and Senior Deputy Governor Tiff Macklem testify before a House of Commons committee about a monetary policy report released last week that lowered domestic growth forecasts but still insisted that rock-bottom interest rates will rise one day.

Canadian retail data out on Tuesday is expected to show the pace of sales growth slowed to 0.3 percent in February from 1.0 percent a month earlier. This would reinforce the market view that the Canadian economy has hit a slow patch and interest rates are unlikely to increase for a long time.

COMPANY NEWS

Power generation company TransAlta Corp reports first-quarter results. Analysts expect the company to earn 20 Canadian cents per share on revenue of C$595.5 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.   Continued...
