Oct 25 (Reuters) - Some U.S. stocks on the move on Thursday:
Wall Street edged up, retreating from session highs as investors were wary of betting aggressively after the S&P 500's worst five-day stretch since May and the data sent more tepid signals on the economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 10.79 points, or 0.08 percent, to 13,088.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 3.32 points, or 0.24 percent, to 1,412.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 2.94 points, or 0.10 percent, to 2,984.63.
** PROCTER & GAMBLE CO, $70.16, up 3 pct (1215 ET)
The world's largest household products maker's profit rose more than expected, indicating that it is making progress after coming under pressure from activist investor William Ackman.
** COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO, $103.71, down 2.6 pct (1218 ET)
The toothpaste maker said it plans to cut about 6 percent of its workforce over the next four years as it strives to operate more nimbly as economies slow in many countries. Its quarterly profit matched expectations.
** PSS WORLD MEDICAL, $28.67, up 32.6 pct (1219 ET)
U.S. drug wholesaler McKesson Corp struck a deal to buy the medical products distributor for $1.46 billion to boost scale and margins in its surgical devices supply business, amid falling medical procedure volumes.
** BUILD-A-BEAR WORKSHOP INC, $3.15, down 25.3 pct (1222 ET)
The toy retailer posted a third-quarter loss while analysts were expecting a profit, as its make-your-own animal stuffed toys failed to resonate with shoppers.

The maker of custom prototype and low-volume plastic parts reported a third-quarter profit that beat market expectations, helped by a revenue jump buoyed by growth in Europe and Japan.

** SPIRIT AEROSYSTEMS HOLDINGS INC, $15.06, down 30.4 pct (1223 ET)
The aircraft parts supplier said it will record about $590 million in charges in the third quarter related to its participation in the Boeing 787 and Gulfstream wing programs. The company also said it will receive lower-than-expected insurance claims for a tornado that damaged its Wichita, Kansas facility in April.

The company's adjusted profit fell in the third quarter as a difficult mergers and acquisitions market weighed on its revenue but the boutique investment bank said it remains cautiously optimistic about the economic environment.

The second-largest U.S. homebuilder reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit and a sharp rise in new orders as housing demand rebounded.

One of the world's largest producers of corrugated packaging and paper posted a lower-than-expected profit on Thursday due to weak sales of consumer packaging in North America and Asia.

The U.S. staffing company posted lower-than-expected quarterly results and forecast fourth-quarter below analysts' expectations. The company also said it expects further declines in its large customer projects as the uncertain economic conditions continue.
Robert W. Baird & Co and BMO Capital Markets downgraded the stock to "neutral" and its equivalent.

The transportation and logistics service provider reported lower-than-expected quarterly results and cut its full-year outlook, as competitive pricing and rising rail costs continued to hurt its intermodal business.

The discount e-retailer posted a better-than-expected quarterly results as its pricing initiatives and new products brought more customers to its website.

The three-dimensional printer maker 3D Systems Corp reported better-than-expected quarterly results as printer sales more than doubled, prompting the company to raise its full-year forecast.

The computer mouse-maker expects lower sales and operating income for the rest of the year as market weakness offsets any benefits of new product launches.
** TENNECO INC, $31.23, up 16.5 pct (1226 ET)
The company reported a quarterly adjusted profit that beat Wall Street expectations, sending the auto parts maker's share price up 16 percent, but it signaled that it will sustain losses in Europe due to slow auto sales there.

The Internet telephony company reported largely in line second-quarter results on Wednesday, but average monthly revenue per business customer rose 24 percent to $256. The chipmaker forecast fourth quarter sales below analysts' expectations as some LTE transceiver sales planned for the quarter were sold in the third quarter.

Zynga's quarterly revenue beat and its higher full-year earnings forecast show the embattled "FarmVille" creator may be on the path to recovery, analysts said, with at least one brokerage upgrading the company's stock.

Hertz's $2.56 billion-bid for rival Dollar Thrifty is facing resistance at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Bloomberg reported.
** ALLIANCE BERNSTEIN HOLDING LP, $17.36, up 11.4 pct (1228 ET)
The U.S. asset manager's shares were at their highest in more than a year, after reporting a better-than-expected profit and a dramatic decline in the amount of customer money being withdrawn from its investment funds.

The chipmaker forecast adjusted profit below analysts' expectations for the current quarter.
Research firm Lazard Capital Markets downgraded the stock to "neutral," while Canaccord Genuity cut its price target on it to $5 from $5.50.

The Canadian trucking company reported a wider-than-expected loss, hurt by poor performance at its less-than- truckload (LTL) shipping business in the United States.

The maker of graphite electrodes, reported better-than-expected quarterly results, helped partly by a 39 percent sales increase in its engineered solutions segment.

The largest North American producer of iron ore pellets used in steelmaking, posted an 85 percent drop in profit on lower iron ore prices and higher costs.

The company, which makes hard disks and storage software, forecast second-quarter results below Wall Street's expectations.
At least three brokerages cut their price targets on the stock. "The Dec-qtr guide was disappointing as it represented the first quarter in which Fusion-io did not raise expectations," RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani said.

The apparel and footwear maker reported third-quarter revenue below analysts' estimates and said it expects margins to be pressured by higher freight costs.

The title insurer's stock touched a more than three-year high after its quarterly profit rose more than 80 percent on the back of strong revenue growth from title orders.

The U.S. heavy truck maker reported lower quarterly profit and sales, reflecting lower industry truck orders in Europe and North America due to an uneven economy, but beat Wall Street estimates.

At least three brokerages raised their price targets on the stock.

The bearings maker posted a lower quarterly profit and cut its full-year sales forecast, citing weak demand and a fragile global economy.

The payday and online lender posted second-quarter profit that widely missed Wall Street estimates, as the company was hurt by higher costs and setting aside more money to cover bad loans.

The company, which makes chips used in telecom networks, reported a smaller-than-expected third-quarter loss, helped by new customers and higher demand for its products.
** AMERIPRISE FINANCIAL INC, $59.83, up 4.8 pct (1249 ET)
The brokerage posted better-than-expected results in the third quarter as its recent success in recruiting financial advisers from bigger rivals, along with market appreciation, helped drive an 18 percent increase in the amount of assets the company's advisers manage. The company also increased its dividend by 29 percent to 45 cents per share and announced a share buyback program of $2 billion through 2014.
** SUPERVALU INC, $2.99, up 4.2 pct (1250 ET)
Buyout firm Cerberus Capital Management is preparing a takeover bid for the third-largest U.S. supermarket chain with an eye toward divesting the troubled company's assets to several parties only interested in pieces, according to people familiar with the matter.
** TELLABS INC, $3.03, down 3.7 pct (1250 ET)
The network equipment maker reported third-quarter revenue on Wednesday, which fell below expectations and forecast fourth-quarter revenue well below Street. It said it expects to take a restructuring charge of about $11 million in the fourth quarter to lower its cost of goods sold and reduce sales.
** DUNKIN' BRANDS GROUP INC, $31.40, up 1.9 pct (1251 ET)
Dunkin' Brands' profit quadrupled, topping Wall Street estimates, but revenue fell short of forecasts as sales cooled at established U.S. Dunkin' Donuts cafes.
