BUZZ-Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp: FDA authorizes emergency use of Ebola treatment

** Canadian biopharmaceutical’s shares up 6.4 pct at C$24.07

** U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorizes emergency use of Tekmira’s ebola treatment under expanded access protocol to confirmed or suspected patients

** This comes two weeks after the World Health Organization urged pharmaceutical companies and regulatory agencies to work together to accelerate development of safe drugs and vaccines against Ebola

** Expanded access lets drug developers offer experimental therapies to patients with serious diseases who cannot participate in controlled clinical trials

** FDA last month lifted partial hold on Tekmira’s Ebola treatment, codenamed TKM-Ebola, to enable potential use in infected humans

** Up to Friday’s close, stock had risen 45 pct after the company’s FDA lifted partial hold on the treatment in August (Reuters Messaging: sneha.banerjee.thomsonreuters.com@reuters.net)
