The Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.09 percent at 17,671.96, the S&P 500 was down 0.21 percent at 2,047.41 and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.37 percent at 4,684.941.

Shares of the company, a maker of artificial retinas that partially restores sight for the blind, rose as much as 150 percent in their market debut. The company's offering of 3.5 million shares priced was at $9 per share, raising $31.5 million.
** STAGE STORES INC, $18.6, +18.17 pct
The apparel and accessories retailer reported better-than-expected third-quarter revenue as sales quickened during the back-to-school season and demand rose for its warm clothing in autumn.
The company forecast flat to 2 percent comparable sales growth in the holiday shopping quarter.
