The Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.29 percent at 17,986.25, the S&P 500 was down 0.29 percent at 2,084.42 and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.35 percent at 4,790.039.

Shares of oil and gas companies fell after Brent crude plunged to a five-and-a-half-year low of less than $57 per barrel as a global supply glut outweighed concerns of lost supply from Libya where battling militias have closed ports. Brent fell $1.14 per barrel to $56.74, its lowest since May 2009, before recovering to trade around $57.70, down 18 cents, by 1440 GMT. U.S. crude was up 10 cents at $53.71 after hitting $52.70, also its lowest since May 2009.

Shares of the Canadian drugmaker rose a day after a female healthcare worker in Glasgow was diagnosed with Ebola. Tekmira said last week that it would supply one of its experimental Ebola treatments for clinical studies to be conducted in West Africa next year.
The World Health Organization said on Monday that the number of people infected by Ebola in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, which are the worst affected by the outbreak, has passed 20,000, with more than 7,842 deaths in the epidemic so far.
