The Dow Jones industrial average was up 1.05 percent at 17,936.13, the S&P 500 was up 1.01 percent at 2,074.12 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.87 percent at 4,914.13.

** SALIX PHARMACEUTICALS INC, $172.74, +1.97 pct

** ENDO INTERNATIONAL PLC, $89.947, +3.00 pct

Valeant Pharmaceuticals increased its takeover offer for Salix to $10.96 billion in cash, bumping out Endo, the only other bidder for the maker of gastrointestinal drugs.

** PROCTER & GAMBLE CO, $83.49, +2.03 pct

The beauty and personal products maker is exploring a sale or initial public offering of some of its beauty brands in a single deal, Bloomberg reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter.   Continued...
