The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.69 percent at 18,165.91, the S&P 500 was up 0.85 percent at 2,121.99 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 1.29 percent at 5,097.749.

Chipmaker Broadcom, which has a market value of $28 billion as of Tuesday's close, is in talks to be bought by Avago, the Wall Street Journal reported.
