The Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.51 percent at 17,639.25 and the S&P 500 was down 0.63 percent at 2,063.66.

Health insurer Aetna on Friday said it would buy smaller rival Humana for about $37 billion in cash and stock, in the largest ever deal in the insurance industry.
The deal will face rigorous scrutiny from U.S. regulators, which antitrust experts said could also make other large-scale mergers in the sector more difficult.

The U.S. FDA removed a partial clinical hold on a late-stage trial of Versartis' experimental drug to treat growth hormone deficiency in children.

The Canadian biotech said data from the mid-stage study of its experimental drug, reolysin, in combination with chemotherapy gemcitabine suggests an increase in median overall survival.

The company announced a special cash dividend of 50 cents per share payable on Aug. 12 to stockholders of record as of July 21.
** HORSEHEAD HOLDING CORP, $9.67, -15.55 pct
The zinc and nickel producer's stock touched a two-and-half year low of $8.33 after analysts at BB&T downgraded the stock to "hold", citing lower production at the company's Mooresboro unit in North Carolina and a fall in zinc and nickel prices.

The Israeli computer networking equipment maker said it expects second-quarter revenue of $16.8 million-$17.2 million, compared with $17.9 million a year earlier.

The maker of fiber optic components said it expects second-quarter revenue of about $25 million, above the average analyst estimate.

RBC Capital Markets upgraded the stock to "outperform" from "sector perform" and raised its price target to $16 from $14.
Analyst David Francis said the company's Medicare business is set to outperform meaningfully in the short term.

Analysts at Piper Jaffray raised its rating on the stock to "neutral" from "underweight" - theflyonthewall.com.
** NV5 HOLDINGS INC, $27.398, +8.38 pct
Analysts at Roth Capital Partners raised their price target on the stock to $30 from $26. "We anticipate double-digit organic growth this year and recent acquisitions will drive 60 percent higher EBITDA in 2015 and 26 percent in 2016," analysts wrote.
** UNITED CONTINENTAL HOLDINGS INC, $53.19, +3.28 pct
Analysts at Sterne Agee raised their rating to "buy" from "fair value". "Management has stopped 'putting out fires' and is focused on proactive changes to its network to lower unit costs and improve unit revenues in the first and fourth quarters," analyst Michael Derchin wrote.
