The move also pushed the dollar higher, which weighed on oil, copper and other commodity prices.
Dow Jones industrial average futures were down 0.97 percent at 17,383, S&P 500 futures were down 0.82 percent at 2,082.5 and Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.56 percent at 4,540.25.
