The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.03 percent at 17,136.54, the S&P 500 was unchanged at 2,017.48 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.08 percent at 4,842.503.

The microblogging website operator will lay off up to 336 employees, or about 8 percent of its workforce, as co-founder Jack Dorsey readies to revive growth in the company's user base in his second stint as chief executive.

Swedish paper and hygiene products maker SCA said on Tuesday it had agreed to buy U.S. tissue maker Wausau Paper for $513 million in cash, in another step to focus on products ranging from tissues to incontinence protection.

The heart device maker says it may not re-initiate enrollment in its MVAD clinical trial in November as it previously expected. The company had halted the trial last month, citing manufacturing issues.

Spot gold rises as much as 0.2 percent to $1,166.20/ounce and silver rises as much as 1 percent to $15.97/ounce.

SABMiller accepted a takeover proposal at the fifth time of asking after Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer, set out a cash-and-share package currently worth 69 billion pounds ($106 billion).
The deal is likely to result in the disposal of SAB's 58 percent stake in its U.S. joint venture with Molson Coors.
SABMiller shareholder Altria said it was pleased that the brewer was willing to accept larger rival AB InBev's new offer.

The drug developer says a new study found that the tumor pathway targeted by its drug, Indoximod, is responsible for suppression of immunoresponse. NewLink's drug Indoximod is in mid-stage studies for breast cancer, prostate cancer and melanoma among other indications.

The Germany-based microchip equipment maker cut its sales forecast. The company blamed postponement of shipments to a large Chinese customer.

Europe's biggest software maker reported a 19 percent rise in third-quarter operating profit on Tuesday, surprising markets by bringing forward its forecast-beating results by a week.
** FMC CORP, $35.86, -4.45 pct
The diversified chemical maker cut its full-year adjusted profit forecast for the second time, citing a fall in the value of the Brazilian currency, and said it would cut 800 to 850 jobs.
** FX ENERGY INC, $1.13, +5.61 pct
Poland's top refiner, the state-controlled PKN Orlen , said it has launched takeover bids for Canada's Kicking Horse Energy and Nasdaq-listed FX Energy, worth a total of over $300 million.

U.S. airline stocks down after JPMorgan cuts its rating on JetBlue's stock to "neutral." The brokerage forecast lower profit for the U.S. airline industry in 2017, citing higher fuel and labor costs. JP Morgan also cut price targets on United Continental and American Airlines.

The drug developer said a mid-stage study testing its experimental patch to treat low blood sugar met the main goal.

The drug maker said on Monday the FDA would not be able to complete review of its opioid painkiller, Xtampza, by the set date of Oct. 12. Collegium, which gave no reasons for the FDA's delay, did not say when the review is now expected to be completed.

The British bank is close to naming former JPMorgan Chase banker Jes Staley as chief executive, signaling a renewed focus on an investment banking division that has been pared back over the past three years.
