BUZZ-U.S. STOCKS ON THE MOVE-Monsanto, Apple, Valeant, Fiat Chrysler

U.S. stock index e-mini futures fell on Wednesday as China allowed its currency to weaken further and oil prices fell to their lowest in more than 11 years: Dow Jones industrial average futures were down 1.57 percent at 16,812, S&P 500 futures were down 1.70 percent at 1,977.5 and Nasdaq 100 futures were down 1.93 percent at 4,397.25.

** APPLE INC, Tuesday close $102.71, -2.20 pct premarket

** NXP SEMICONDUCTORS NV, Tuesday close $82.39, -2.17 pct premarket

** SKYWORKS SOLUTIONS INC, Tuesday close $73.29, -2.58 pct premarket

Apple is expected to cut production of its latest iPhone models by about 30 percent in the January-March quarter due to mounting inventories, the Nikkei reported.

Shares of Apple suppliers NXP and Skyworks also fell after the report.

** MONSANTO CO, Tuesday close $97.28, -1.32 pct premarket

The world’s largest seed company reported a quarterly loss, compared with a profit a year earlier, hurt by lower corn prices and a strong dollar.

** YAHOO INC, Tuesday close $32.2, -1.27 pct premarket

Activist investor Starboard Value LP said the Internet company should consider changing its management, board and its business strategy. In a letter to Yahoo’s board, Starboard said the company should separate its Asia assets, its stakes in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan Corp, through either a sale or spinoff of the core search and advertising business.

** CHEMOCENTRYX INC, Tuesday close $6.81, +23.79 pct premarket

The drug developer said its experimental drug was as effective as standard of care in treating patients with a rare type of autoimmune disease in a mid-stage study.

** MANNKIND CORP, Tuesday close $0.7476, -10.38 pct premarket

French drugmaker Sanofi is to stop selling an inhalable insulin developed by drugmaker MannKind, following disappointing sales of the product since its launch in February 2015.

Piper Jaffray cut its price target on the stock to $0.05 from $1.50, while RBC cut it to $0.15 from $1.

** FIAT CHRYSLER AUTOMOBILES NV, Tuesday close $9.07, -5.40 pct premarket

Goldman Sachs cut its price target on the automaker’s stock to 12 euros from 18 euros and on the U.S.-listed stock to $13 from $19.60, mainly to strip out the value of Fiat Chrysler’s Ferrari stake. Analysts said Fiat Chrysler remained more indebted than rivals General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co.

** VERIZON COMMUNICATIONS INC, Tuesday close $46.5, -2.19 pct premarket

The wireless carrier has started a process to sell its data center assets, hoping to fetch more than $2.5 billion, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday, as the U.S. telecoms conglomerate focuses on its core business.

** PIONEER NATURAL RESOURCES CO, Tuesday close $125.17, -8.13 pct premarket

The oil and gas explorer announced an upsized offering of its common stock at $117 per share. The company raised the size of the offering to 12 million shares from 10.5 million. It expects total gross proceeds of about $1.4 billion from the offering.

Nomura cut its price target on the stock to $165 from $174, RBC to $150 from $152 and Topeka Capital to $175 from $185.

** VALEANT PHARMACEUTICALS INTERNATIONAL INC, Tuesday close $100.86, -3.20 pct premarket

The drugmaker appointed Howard Schiller interim chief executive, effective immediately. The company’s CEO Michael Pearson is hospitalized with a severe bout of pneumonia.

** CONATUS PHARMACEUTICALS INC, Tuesday close $2.87, +24.74 pct premarket

The drug developer said its experimental drug reduced the presence of a protein fragment in patients with liver cirrhosis in a mid-stage trial.

** LOCKHEED MARTIN CORP, Tuesday close $218.26, -1.10 pct premarket

** OSHKOSH CORP, Tuesday close $37.58, +0.82 pct premarket

The U.S. Court of Federal Claims will hear arguments on Jan. 20 in weapons maker Lockheed’s motion to halt Oshkosh’s work on 17,000 armored Humvee truck replacements for the U.S. Army while Lockheed challenges the $6.75 billion contract.
