U.S. stock index futures were lower on Tuesday as oil dropped and comments by Federal Reserve officials further muddied the outlook for interest rate hikes: Dow Jones industrial average futures were down 0.63 percent at 17,531, S&P 500 futures were down 0.75 percent at 2,042 and Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.64 percent at 4,471.25.

The U.S. Treasury Department took new steps to curb tax-avoiding corporate "inversions," with the pending $160 billion merger of Pfizer and Allergan seen as a potential casualty.

The electric carmaker said that parts shortages hampered vehicle production and sales in the first quarter, but the electric car maker still plans to build 80,000 to 90,000 vehicles this year.
