The Dow Jones industrial average was up 1.37 percent at 16,278.22, the S&P 500 was up 1.25 percent at 1,937.73 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 1.63 percent at 4,711.812.

The medical device maker says it will buy heart device maker Valtech Cardio
Raymond James, BTIG Research cut ratings on HeartWare stock, while Sterne Agee CRT and Piper Jaffray cut price target. "We sense investors would have preferred focus on near-term results and maybe being acquired rather than starting new trials," BTIG analysts write.
