(Reuters) - Richard M. Daley, who was mayor of Chicago from 1989 to 2011, was in the intensive care unit of a Chicago hospital on Saturday after falling ill the day before, the hospital said.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital said that Daley, 71, became ill after returning from a business trip in Arizona and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

"He is in Northwestern's ICU for monitoring and evaluation," the hospital said in a statement on Saturday. "Mayor Daley's family is with him and they are visiting between tests."

No further information was immediately available.
