OTTAWA (Reuters) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Sunday called an election for October 14 in a bid to strengthen his hold on power after 2 1/2 years in charge of a minority Conservative party government.

Harper announced the election call in a statement that was handed to reporters after he visited governor-general Michaelle Jean to ask her to dissolve Parliament.
