Ottawa boosts 2010 Olympics spending
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - The federal government pledged an additional C$20 million to the 2010 Winter Olympics on Friday, picking up half the expected tab for the Vancouver Games' opening and closing ceremonies.
The federal government is already paying for half the C$580 million construction budget for the venue, and will be responsible for the cost of security. The size of the security budget has not yet been released.
The opening and closing events, to be held in the enclosed B.C. Place stadium in downtown Vancouver, are budgeted at C$40 million. It will mark the first time the opening ceremony for a Winter Games has been held indoors.
Organizers of the Vancouver event picked Australian David Atkins last year to produce the two events. Atkins oversaw the same spectacles for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney.
