TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian soldier was killed and two others were injured in Afghanistan on Wednesday when a military convoy struck an improvised mine near the southern city of Kandahar, the Canadian government said.

The incident brings Canada's military death toll in Afghanistan to 78.

Polls show Canadians are deeply divided over their role in the combat mission, and an independent panel recommended earlier this week Canada should withdraw its 2,500-strong contingent next year unless NATO sends in reinforcements.
