RICHMOND, British Columbia (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Thursday the government would spend as much as is needed to keep the country’s military safe in Afghanistan.

Harper was responding to a reporter’s question on a campaign stop in a Vancouver suburb about a just-released report by the Parliament Budget Office that said Canada’s military involvement in Afghanistan has already cost up to C$10.5 billion ($9.13 billion) and could eventually hit C$18 billion.

($1=$1.15 Canadian)
