Canada says spending vital to protect economy

TORONTO (Reuters) - Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Monday that government infrastructure spending will be vital to protecting the nation's economy from the global financial crisis.

Flaherty said Ottawa will do whatever is needed to protect the financial system from the crisis, and added that Canada's new reality will include wild market swings and ever-gloomier economic forecasts.
