OTTAWA (Reuters) - The Canadian government is open to helping the auto sector, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Friday, speaking after the collapse of a proposed deal in the U.S. Senate to aid the auto industry there.

"Our government is open to helping the industry. This is a day-by-day thing, obviously, in terms of developments in the United States ... we'll continue to stay close to the situation there and continue the discussions with the industry here," he told a televised news conference in Saint John, New Brunswick.
