TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - A Fox News talk show host on Monday apologized for ridiculing the Canadian military after a protest from the country's defense minister.

Greg Gutfeld, host of Fox News' "Red Eye" show, had joked last week that the Canadian military may want "to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white Capri pants."

Canadian Defense Minister Peter McKay called for an apology Monday before he was due to receive the remains of four Canadian soldiers killed in combat in Afghanistan over the weekend. He called the American TV show's take on Canada's military efforts in Afghanistan "despicable" and "disgusting."

Gutfeld defended the offending March 17 episode of "Red Eye" show as satirical, but added he realized that his "words may have been misunderstood."

"It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize," he said.

The "Red Eye" segment provoked a Canadian media furor after it was posted to YouTube and Facebook.
