TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - “American Idol” is once again dominating the Canadian winter TV season.
Toronto-based CTV Friday said that the reality show, now in its seventh season, was the top-rated TV show north of the border for the December 17-February 3 period, averaging nearly 3 million viewers since its January 15 debut, according to BBM/Nielsen Media Research figures.
The season opener for “Idol” peaked at 3.1 million total viewers, according to BBM Nielsen Media Research, down from the 2007 series bow and its peak of 3.6 million viewers.
But the seventh-season ratings have since trended upward, CTV said, with a season average of 2.78 million total viewers, compared with 2.69 million last year.
By time slots, Fox’s “American Idol” has averaged 2.98 million total viewers on Tuesday nights, and 2.72 million on Wednesdays.
“American Idol” also averages 42% more viewers than the next-highest-rated program on Canadian television, “CSI Miami,” which has pulled in 2.09 million total viewers during the current winter TV season.
Other performers on Canadian TV this season include “Criminal Minds,” with a season average of 1.97 million total viewers, and “CSI: New York” with 1.9 million viewers.
