LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - “I Am Legend” took the top spot at the foreign box office for a fifth consecutive weekend with sales of $28.7 million from 54 countries, according to estimates issued Sunday. The total for the Will Smith smash rose to $262.4 million.
“Legend” opened at No. 1 in Mexico ($4.1 million) and Brazil ($3.1 million), and held at No. 1 in Germany and Italy. Top contributors to the international total include the U.K. ($47.2 million) and Japan ($36.1 million).
The biggest newcomer to the international field was “Sweeney Todd,” which drew an estimated $6.6 million from four markets. The Tim Burton musical opened at No. 1 in Japan ($3.7 million) and Korea ($2.2 million). Openings in the U.K., France and Australia are due this week.
Also notable was “Cloverfield,” the new North American champ, which opened at No. 1 in Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, earning $4.3 million overall from six markets.
The No. 2 international title was “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem,” which collected $11.7 million from 47 markets, lifting its overseas total to $69.8 million. “Alvin and the Chipmunks” finished at No. 3 with $9.4 million from 53 markets. Its overseas total stands at $95.1 million.
