NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Music videos veteran Liz Friedlander is attached to direct "I Am Charlotte Simmons," the first Tom Wolfe novel the author has optioned for the screen since 1987's box office flop "The Bonfire of the Vanities."

The tale of an innocent country girl navigating her way through freshman year at the fictional Dupont University was published in 2005. John Watson ("Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves") is adapting the script for the independently financed project.

Friedlander made her feature directing debut with 2006's "Take the Lead." She has directed videos for the likes of U2 ("Walk On"), R.E.M. ("The Great Beyond") and Blink 182 ("Adam's Song").

The big-screen version of "Bonfire of the Vanities" starred Tom Hanks in the tale of media manipulation and political opportunism. The widely panned movie sparked its own book, investigative reporter Julie Salamon's "The Devil's Candy."
