NEW YORK (Billboard) - After spending 16 years on Geffen Records, Weezer has gone the indie route and signed to Epitaph Records. The group's label debut, "Hurley," is due in stores September 14, preceded by first single "Memories."
Epitaph owner Brett Gurewitz announced the signing on Twitter Wednesday night, writing, "Rivers, Pat, Brian and Scott, Welcome to Epitaph homies!"
The release of "Raditude" last October fulfilled Weezer's contractual obligation to Universal Music-owned Geffen, which had handled the band since its 1994 debut "Weezer (The Blue Album)."
Los Angeles-based Epitaph's roster includes hard-rock staples Rancid and Social Distortion.
