LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Alternative rock band White Lies went straight to number one in the British album charts, fulfilling their billing as one of the most hotly tipped new acts for 2009, the Official Charts Company said.

The band from Ealing, west London, achieved the first number one debut album by a British act this year with "To Lose My Life."

Frontman Harry McVeigh said: "It's feels truly amazing to have such incredible early success."

The band caught the attention of music writers and fans during last summer's festivals and a sell-out UK tour.

Still at number two after 18 weeks was Kings of Leon with "Only by the Night," while Irish pop rock band Script dropped two places to number three with "The Script."

There was little change at the top of the singles charts where American singer Lady GaGa remained at number one with "Just Dance." She held off "Day 'n' Nite," a collaboration between Cleveland rapper Kid Cudi and Italian dance act Crookers.

"Take Me Back," by Tinchy Stryder, real name Kwasi Danquah, and featuring Taio Cruz, jumped from number 39 to three.
