(Reuters Life!) - “Star Trek,” the action adventure movie directed by J.J. Abrams, held its world premiere in Australia on Tuesday, the 11th feature film stemming from Gene Roddenberry’s fictional universe.

Here are some details about the Star Trek series:

STAR TREK ON TELEVISION:

-- Star Trek began in the early 1960s as an idea of Gene Roddenberry, a World War Two veteran and former L.A. policeman who had become an established television writer/producer.

-- The Original Series ran on NBC from 1966-1969, for a total of three seasons and 78 episodes.

-- The show was a minor hit and was terminated after three years but enough episodes were produced so that it could enter syndication, and it was within the after-school market during the early 1970s that the show found its audience.

-- The classic Star Trek features the adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 dispatched by the Earth-based Starfleet Command to explore the galaxy.

KEY CHARACTERS FROM THE ORIGINAL SERIES:

-- Captain James T. Kirk played by William Shatner, who leads by his wits and strength of character.

-- The half-Vulcan first officer Commander Spock played by Leonard Nimoy.

-- The opinionated and passionate chief medical officer, Dr. Leonard H. “Bones” McCoy played by DeForest Kelley.

-- Chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott played by James Doohan.

-- Keeping the ship on course is Lt. Sulu played by George Takei, at the helm.

-- The young, proud Russian, Ensign Pavel Chekov played by Walter Koenig on navigation and weapons.

OTHER TV PRODUCTIONS:

-- Star Trek: The Next Generation - From 1987 until 1994, featuring more advanced special effects and ran for 178 episodes.

-- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The third Star Trek television series was shown in the United States for seven seasons from 1992 to 1999 when the action moved from a starship to a space station. It was conceived as a “companion piece” to The Next Generation.

-- Star Trek: Voyager - The fourth Star Trek series, released in January 1995, broke new ground by featuring a female captain - Kathryn Janeway - and ran for seven years.
