(Reuters Life!) - "Star Trek," the action adventure movie directed by J.J. Abrams, held its world premiere in Australia on Tuesday, the 11th feature film stemming from Gene Roddenberry's fictional universe.

Here are some details about the Star Trek series:

STAR TREK ON TELEVISION:

-- Star Trek began in the early 1960s as an idea of Gene Roddenberry, a World War Two veteran and former L.A. policeman who had become an established television writer/producer.

-- The Original Series ran on NBC from 1966-1969, for a total of three seasons and 78 episodes.

-- The show was a minor hit and was terminated after three years but enough episodes were produced so that it could enter syndication, and it was within the after-school market during the early 1970s that the show found its audience.

-- The classic Star Trek features the adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 dispatched by the Earth-based Starfleet Command to explore the galaxy.
