LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, who has just returned to the stage after cancer surgery, will be among the highlights of this year's British "proms" music festival where he will sing in Verdi's opera "Simon Boccanegra"
The annual event, which runs from July 16 to September 11, also features Bryn Terfel in Wagner's "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg," Renee Fleming and a proms concert debut for jazz star Jamie Cullum, organisers said on Thursday.
In a departure from the norm, there will be two "Last Nights" in 2010 -- a recreation of the Last Night of the Proms from 100 years ago and the "real" last night on September 11.
The finale is a highlight of the British cultural calendar where a raucous crowd of hundreds in the Royal Albert Hall join the orchestra in patriotic songs.
The 150th anniversary of Gustav Mahler's birth means performances of six symphonies from orchestral partnerships including Simon Rattle with the Berlin Philharmonic and Valery Gergiev with the players of the World Orchestra for Peace.
Among other highlights during the two-month festival are two events bringing Broadway to the proms -- one celebrating Stephen Sondheim and the other the work of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
