Management Tip of the Day: Ways to get your idea heard

BOSTON (Reuters Life!) - To be a protagonist you've got to not only speak up and be heard, but to do it in a way that advances the organization's goals and doesn't brand you as a self-serving scene-stealer, says Harvard Business Review.

The Management Tip of the Day offers quick, practical management tips and ideas from Harvard Business Review and HBR.org (www.hbr.org). Any opinions expressed are not endorsed by Reuters.

"In today's hustle and bustle organizations, new ideas easily get lost in the fray. If you have a proposal you want heard, don't resort to aggressive tactics.

Here are three strategies that are far more effective:

1. Know what people care about. Figure out what matters to your colleagues. Read their blogs, follow them on Twitter, ask them directly. This will help you present your idea in the right context.

2. Answer the 'why not.' Most ideas have many reasons why they might fail. Think through the risks, flaws, and options before speaking up.

3. Be passionate. Be clear about why you think you have a good idea. But don't insist you're right. Persuade others by sharing your enthusiasm."
