SEOUL (Reuters Life!) - A South Korean television star who attracted thousands of fans to his send-off for compulsory military service is to be posted to an island in a hostile area close to North Korea.

Hyun Bin, known best known for his role in the drama "Secret Garden," has been assigned to Baengnyeong Island, near the site of several naval clashes between the two Koreas in recent years.

During his month-long basic training, the 28-year-old won a sharpshooter badge for his performance with a rifle.

Hyun Bin sparked a wave of media hysteria last year when he kissed the cappuccino mustache of his screen girlfriend during an episode of "Secret Garden."

All Korean males must attend 22 months of national service.
