At least four Western countries issued Christmas security warnings for Westerners in the Chinese capital but it did not deter hundreds of Catholics from attending midnight mass on Christmas Eve at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

In a statement on Thursday Beijing police said they had issued a "yellow" security alert for Christmas and New Year, the second lowest level. It was focused on areas like malls, which people are more likely to visit during the holiday season.
