LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Animated comedy "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" shot to the top of the UK box office over the weekend with one of the highest opening takes of the year.

The follow-up to the original 2005 hit features the animals of New York City zoo trying to return to Madagascar by repairing a war-era airplane.

It took 6.3 million pounds, according to Screen International on Tuesday, and knocked seasonal comedy "Four Christmases," down to second place.

"Transporter 3," the latest outing of Jason Statham in the role of tough trucker Frank Martin, was new at three.

Clint Eastwood's new film "Changeling," a tale of corruption and deceit in 1928 Los Angeles, was down one place at four while Daniel Craig as James Bond in "Quantum of Solace" slipped three places to five.

Espionage drama "Body of Lies" with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe slipped two places to sixth.

Making its debut at seven was "Lakeview Terrace" with Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington as an inter-racial couple finding the new neighbors less than friendly.

"My Best Friend's Girl," with Kate Hudson, Jason Biggs and Dane Cook in a love-triangle comedy was down at eight from five.

Also down three places, at nine was "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," while horror movie "The Children" came in at 10.
