LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Damon Albarn's band Gorillaz will play at the Glastonbury festival next month following the withdrawal of U2, festival organizers said on Wednesday.

Gorillaz, best known as a cartoon virtual band, will play the headline slot on Friday June 25 on the main stage at the festival in southwest England.

U2 had to pull out after frontman Bono had emergency surgery on his injured back.

"It's a terrible thing for U2 -- Glastonbury is magical. Gorillaz will come to life on that stage but we wish Bono all the best," Albarn said.

Albarn reunited his Blur band to close Glastonbury last summer. Glastonbury, one of the top summer music festivals in western Europe, runs from June 23-27.
