Red Wings edge Caps in shootout
DETROIT (Reuters) - Tomas Holmstrom scored twice in regulation and Detroit were a perfect three-for-three in the shootout to beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 on Monday.
In the only other game on the NHL schedule, Colorado beat the Kings 4-2 in Los Angeles.
Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Jiri Hudler scored on Capitals netminder Olaf Kolzig in the shootout to give the Red Wings their 15th home win in 18 games this season.
"I don't think it was a very good game from us, but we pulled it off any way," Holmstrom told reporters.
The Detroit winger, returning from a two-game absence with a sore knee, opened the scoring in the first period with a powerplay goal.
Washington hit back to take a 2-1 lead through Alexander Ovechkin and Jeff Schultz, before Zetterberg and Holmstrom nosed Detroit back in front.
Washington's Alexander Semin forced overtime with less than two minutes left in regulation with a powerplay goal.
Datsyuk assisted on all three of the Red Wings' goals in regulation.
"The stuff he does on the ice is just magic out there," Holmstrom said. Continued...
