NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX fell 152.83 points, or 1.06 percent, to 14,264.06.
Leading the index were Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd , up 10.9 percent, Baytex Energy Corp , up 8.5 percent, and Crescent Point Energy Corp , up by 6.9 percent.
Lagging shares were Home Capital Group Inc , down 15.0 percent, Yamana Gold Inc, down 9.1 percent, and First Majestic Silver Corp, lower by 8.1 percent.
On the TSX 61 issues rose and 182 fell as a 0.3-to-1 ratio favored decliners. There were 4 new highs and 30 new lows, with total volume of 370.0 million shares.
The most heavily traded shares by volume were Bombardier Inc , Enbridge Inc and Baytex Energy Corp.
The TSX’s energy group fell 0.18 points, or 0.13 percent, while the financials sector slipped 3.26 points, or 1.19 percent.
West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 3.72 percent, or $1.72, to $47.96 a barrel. Brent crude rose 0.64 percent, or $0.36, to $56.62 [O/R]
The TSX is off 12 percent for the year.
