TSX rises 0.17 percent, energy leads

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX .GSPTSE rose 24.30 points, or 0.17 percent, to 14,347.16.

Leading the index were Bausch Health Companies Inc (BHC.TO), up 8.8 percent, Eldorado Gold Corp (ELD.TO), up 8 percent, and Canopy Growth Corp (WEED.TO), higher by 7.3 percent.

Lagging shares were First Quantum Minerals Ltd (FM.TO), down 4.3 percent, Norbord Inc (OSB.TO), down 3.5 percent, and Lucara Diamond Corp (LUC.TO), lower by 3.4 percent.

On the TSX, 135 issues rose and 102 fell as a 1.3-to-1 ratio favored advancers. There were 2 new highs and 2 new lows, with total volume of 260.0 million shares.

The most heavily traded shares by volume were Barrick Gold Corp (ABX.TO), Aurora Cannabis Inc (ACB.TO) and Bombardier Inc (BBDb.TO).

The TSX’s energy group .SPTTEN rose 2.55 points, or 1.85 percent, while the financials sector .SPTTFS climbed 0.55 points, or 0.2 percent.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures CLc1 rose 2.69 percent, or $1.22, to $46.63 a barrel. Brent crude LCOc1  rose 2.38 percent, or $1.28, to $55.08 [O/R]
