The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX rose 39.65 points, or 0.24 percent, to 16,397.40.
Leading the index were Element Fleet Management Corp, up 13.5 percent, TORC Oil & Gas Ltd, up 6.1 percent, and Crescent Point Energy Corp, higher by 5.2 percent.
Lagging shares were Iamgold Corp, down 5.9 percent, Home Capital Group Inc, down 4.1 percent, and Fortuna Silver Mines Inc, lower by 3.9 percent.
On the TSX 121 issues rose and 113 fell as a 1.1-to-1 ratio favored advancers. There were 6 new highs and 8 new lows, with total volume of 213.4 million shares.
The most heavily traded shares by volume were Kinross Gold Corp, Manulife Financial Corp and Element Fleet Management Corp.
The TSX’s energy group rose 2.62 points, or 1.7 percent, while the financials sector slipped 0.19 points, or 0.1 percent.
West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 0.94 percent, or $0.58, to $61.98 a barrel. Brent crude rose 0.47 percent, or $0.33, to $70.21 [O/R]
The TSX is up 14.5 percent for the year.
