Toronto stocks buoyed by TransAlta, resources

TORONTO, July 21 (Reuters) - The Toronto Stock Exchange’s main index surged on Monday, propelled by a takeover bid for TransAlta Corp (TA.TO), while resource issues climbed in tandem with commodity prices.

The S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE unofficially closed up 161.21 points, or 1.19 percent, at 13,677.17. (Reporting by Leah Schnurr; Editing by Peter Galloway)
